Episode 21-Dene michael “hold Me now”

Episode 21 features Dene Michael singing a song called “Hold Me Now” written by Chris. The backing track which Dene is performing to is also arranged, recorded and mastered by Chris.

Dene Michael was a member the British pop band “Black Lace” (no connection to Paper Lace) They were best known for their party records,  which included their biggest hit, “Agadoo”.“” 

Dene became a full time member of the band In 1986, replacing Colin Gibb, who took time out of live work with Black Lace (still remaining an official member of the band) but concentrated on other projects.

Another single, “Wig Wam Bam”, (featuring Dene, Alan Barton, Colin Gibb reached No. 63 in the UK charts. Dene and Alan Barton appeared as themselves in the 1987 film  Rita Sue and Bob Two, performing “Gang Bang”, which had been recorded by Dean, Alan Barton and Colin Gibb the previous year. 

September 1987 saw a switch round: Colin Gibb returned ‘full-time’ with the band, whilst Alan Barton left to join  “Smokie” Dene and Colin Gibb released the single “Jammin’ the Sixties” under the name Barracuda. The record was BBC Radio One’s Record of the Week.

A summer season at the  Blackpool Tower followed in 1989 and 1990, plus performances at the BBC  Radio One Roadshow in the town, along with the release of the single  “I Am The Music Man” which peaked in the top 50 in the UK charts.

15 August 1997 was dubbed Agadoo Day. Black Lace played 20 shows in 24 hours in Manchester, London, Watford, Northampton, Sheffield, Barnsley, Wakefield and Leeds, finishing at the Frontier Club, Batley. The event raised over £25,000 for the Marie Curie Cancer care. Peugeot  used “Agadoo” in a TV advertisement for the new 106 car, and Black Lace re-recorded the track, renaming it “Agadoo 106 mix”, donating all their royalties to Marie Curie Cancer care. The record spent a week in the UK charts.
