Turning 80 feels momentous—almost bold. If you look at the number itself, it’s three zeros: two stacked together and one off on its own, a bit of a “Billy no-mates,” as we might say.

Scripture reflects on such milestones: “Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the rest of them are but pain and trouble, for they quickly pass away” (Psalm 90:10). So I’ll do my best to set aside the aches and keep moving forward with the projects buzzing in my head.

This year also marks 80 years since the end of the Second World War. One can’t help but wonder whether humanity has truly learned from that era, especially in light of the conflicts we see today. Sadly, I remain doubtful.

Now to the point: Alison organised a wonderful birthday gathering with friends and neighbours who were able to join. We decided to capture a few video clips and photos and paired them with one of the songs Chris and I currently share on social media, “Close Friends Are Few.” It’s no Spielberg production, but I think it conveys the simple truth that genuine friendship and love for one another matter—not just in old age, but throughout life.

To any friends who don’t appear in the video, please know it’s only because we lacked recent photos. I hope you enjoy the celebration and the message it carries.
