Madam Morel
Using a generous measure of poetic licence and imagination,Madam Morel is a wholly fictional creation, resurrected from my old catalogue of themes, stray lyrics, and forgotten melodies. I ran the idea past Chris, and he agreed with me that although it is a slightly controversial topic we should run with it after all, prostitution is a subject we’ve never explored before in our music.
According to the Britannica Dictionary, the term courtesan historically referred to a sophisticated, socially adept woman who engaged in intimate relationships with wealthy or influential men in exchange for financial support. Today, the word is considered old-fashioned, once describing a middle-aged woman involved in such arrangements.
Over the course of her career, our central character, Madam Morel, has worked across many areas of what is often called the world’s oldest profession. Now 52, she has embraced modern technology and manages several online adult chat platforms. She operates on the top floor of an exclusive hotel room number 909, and she calls her employees Angels.
Angel number 909 is often viewed as a spiritual sign, and when it appears repeatedly, many interpret it as a message that one chapter of life is coming to a natural end so another can begin. Interestingly, my first record—released in 1974 was called 909. That release could have been the catalyst for many of the changes that would unfold over the next two years.
Despite her success as a businesswoman, she remains emotional, soft-hearted and loyal, continuing to provide companionship to long-standing clients at her luxurious apartment.
